The mission
Behind Enemy Lines
Aldo L. Icardi served with the Office of Strategic Services and parachuted into northern Italy as part of the Mangosteen Mission. After the mission’s chief disappeared, Icardi assumed leadership and coordinated intelligence gathering, partisan contacts, and supply operations across a wide area of northern Italy.
The surviving archive includes mission photographs, identification papers, wartime correspondence, military citations, medals, and later newspaper coverage. Visitors should be able to study those materials in context instead of being pushed toward a predetermined conclusion.
